What is DIRBS, and why does PTA block phones?
If you have heard that a phone “needs to be registered” or “got blocked”, the system behind it is DIRBS. Here is what it is, in plain terms, and what it means for a phone you own or are about to buy.
What DIRBS is
DIRBS — the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System — is how the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority keeps a register of which handsets may use local mobile networks. Every phone is identified by its IMEI, and DIRBS decides whether that IMEI is allowed to connect.
It exists to curb smuggled and counterfeit phones and to collect the duty due on imports — which is why registration and tax are tied together.
Why a phone gets blocked
A phone is blocked when its IMEI is not registered — commonly an imported, non-PTA handset whose grace period has ended, or one with an invalid or duplicated IMEI. Blocking affects the device’s ability to use a Pakistani SIM; the phone still works on Wi-Fi.
Because the register is keyed to the device, a block follows the handset when it is resold. A phone blocked before you bought it stays blocked after.
How to check and where Mobilo fits
Check any IMEI by SMS to 8484 or at dirbs.pta.gov.pk; the reply is Compliant, Valid or Invalid. Mobilo is not DIRBS and does not scrape it — Mobilo reports the status it holds and names the source, and adds the stolen and listing history a DIRBS check does not cover.
Common questions
- Is DIRBS the same as being PTA approved?
- PTA approval is the outcome DIRBS records. A “Compliant” result in DIRBS is what people mean by PTA approved.
- Does a blocked phone lose Wi-Fi too?
- No. Blocking affects cellular service on Pakistani networks. The phone still works on Wi-Fi.
- Can Mobilo unblock a phone?
- No. Registration and unblocking are done through PTA’s DIRBS. Mobilo reports status and history; it does not change them.
